Week 1 Term 4 2023
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 4! I hope you had a restful and enjoyable break with your children.
It is always wonderful to welcome our children back at the beginning of the term their enthusiasm and the absolute need to share all their wonderful holiday stories is a delight. How blessed we are in our job!
As we begin our final term for 2023 we are aware of the many events and activities that will keep us busy and focused - lots of learning, Junior Joeys, Swimming awareness, Exuro, Stage 3 excursion, assessments, reports, the swimming carnival, School Captains and Leaders elections for 2023, Advent, Masses and Liturgies, Year 6 Graduation, and the list goes on. Before we know it, we will be at the end of another year and saying goodbye to Year 6 2023. They are already starting to count their "lasts" (The last time they will do things in primary school at St Joseph's).
What a wonderful term we have ahead!
ST JOHN'S COLLEGE WOODLAWN VISIT
On Tuesday we had 5 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student leaders visit the school. They were accompanied by their Indigenous Education Worker, Mr Len Moran and teacher Mr Bernie Maginnity.
The students will visit on a rotating system to our school three times this term, to cook a sausage sizzle for all of our students for lunch and also attend class, to either help students with their work or read with them.
The initiative planned and instigated by Len Moran is framed around the premise that:
- Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can be great role models for many reasons. Firstly, they have a unique perspective on the world that can be incredibly valuable to others. This experience can help them develop resilience, empathy, and a strong sense of purpose, which can inspire and motivate other young students from St Joseph’s Woodburn.
- Secondly, young Aboriginal leaders can often make a deep connection with other younger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, which can be a source of strength and inspiration. By sharing their knowledge and experiences with others, they can help to educate and raise awareness about the rich history and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Finally, young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student leaders can serve as powerful social justice and equity advocates.
Young leaders from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities can serve as excellent role models and mentors due to their unique cultural perspective, commitment to social justice issues, and dedication to their communities.
We thank the 5 students who attended on Tuesday. They were wonderful ambassadors for their school. They cooked and served a sausage sizzle, joined the lunchtime handball comps, and then spent some quality time assisting and working with the students in the classrooms. They even provided some gifts to the classrooms and students. We also thank Mr Len Moran for involving our students in this initiative and the support provided by all at St John's College Woodlawn.

SOCKTOBER SOCCER SHOOT-OUt -
Gold Coin Donation

At lunchtime In colour house teams - )Burbi, Guraman and Gahgan) our students will compete in a soccer goal shootout to raise money for Catholic Mission. We ask that students bring a gold coin donation to support our Catholic Mission fundraising.
Parents are welcome to watch and participate in this event as we are hoping to be able to field a parent team.
Before the event, our students will be learning about Timor Leste and the problems facing their communities. Socktober uses the world game of soccer to form a connection between students in Australia and the children they support with their fundraising, incorporating formation and education. Through Socktober, students are invited to learn about, pray, advocate for, and financially support children and communities in need around the world.
