    Principals Message

    Dear Families

    IMG_2711.JPG

    Welcome to Term 4, I hope you had a restful and fruitful break with your children.

    As always it was a true joy to welcome our children back on Monday morning, with their enthusiasm and the absolute need to share all their wonderful holiday stories. It is a timely reminder to us as staff, of how blessed we are in our job.

    As we begin our final term for 2022 we are aware of the many events and activities that will keep us busy and focussed
    - lots of learning, Junior Joeys, Swimming awareness, Exuro, assessments, reports, the swimming carnival, School Captains and Leaders elections for 2023,
    Advent, Masses and Liturgies, Year 6 Graduation, and the list goes on. Before we know it, we will be at the end of another year and saying goodbye to Year 6 2022. What a wonderful term we have ahead!

      ST JOSEPH'S WILL CONTINUE TO FLOURISH

      WS.JPG.jpg
      As communicated to you through Compass, this week we received very initial advice from the insurer that indicates our school's Woodburn location, may be potentially uninsurable due to its location in a flood area.

      As always, we will continue to stand together as a strong community as we navigate the future. There will be the opportunity for family, students, and staff to share our thoughts on what the future of our school looks like.

      Currently, our situation remains the same at Evans Head as we work together to ensure that our children belong, that they receive the best learning opportunities possible, and are nurtured socially, emotionally, and spiritually as they continue to thrive. We are here to continue to support many of our people still doing it very tough from the floods.

      The latest communications are available on the Compass App.

      ARIELLA AND JASMINE GIVE VOICE TO THE YOUTH

      At the end of the last Term, Ariella Mangan and Jasmine Hayden attended the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Brisbane Convention Centre.

      They had the opportunity to ask a question of an expert panel that included:

      • Professor Tim Flannery - Influential Environmentalist
      • Rosemary Kayess- United Nations  Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
      • Ricardo Tomas Mena Speck Director of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction
      • Nolene Nabulivou- Executive Director of Diverse Voices and Action for Equity
      • Sudirman Said Secretary General of the Indonesian Red Cross.

      The girls were absolutely amazing, very courageous, and spoke strongly for Youth Voice. They were approached throughout the day by many who congratulated them and asked them about their future plans.

      In the afternoon 8 students from St Joseph's College, Banora Point, then joined Jasmine and Ariella to participate in a working session with delegates where they shared their experiences of floods, bushfires, and COVID.

      Congratulations Ariella and Jasmine, we are so proud of you.

      COVID 19 UPDATE

      images_2_.jpg
      The COVID-smart settings that students, staff, and communities have become used to are currently being reviewed by NESA and Catholic Schools NSW in the light of the latest isolation rulings commencing 14 October. Until further notice we will continue with the following strategies:
      • staying home if unwell and testing for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms;
      • encouraging masks to be worn particularly indoors and when physical distancing is not possible;
      • requiring masks for staff and volunteers who interact with students at greater risk of serious illness if they were to contract COVID-19;
      • encouraging up-to-date vaccinations for staff and students, including COVID-19 booster shots for anyone eligible;
      • maintaining natural ventilation;
      • encouraging good hygiene practices.

      IN WEEK 1 OF TERM 4 WE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL FOR:

      images_3_.jpg

      • Our students, for their joy and enthusiasm to learn and be with each other
      • Our holidays
      • Ariella Mangan and Jasmine Hayden for their voice and courage.
      • The upcoming Stage 3 Excursion to Canberra.

      I will be taking Long Service Leave from next Tuesday to spend some time with my family in Fiji. I will return to school in Week 4. While I am away, you will be in the very capable hands of Mrs Denison (Miss Taylor).

      Have a wonderful weekend!

      Regards

        SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION:

        Year C - The 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

        Gospel Reading
        Luke 18:1-8

        Persistent_prayer.JPG

        In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a woman who is persistent. She asks a judge for what she wants. The judge gives the woman what she wants because she is persistent. Jesus says that we are to be persistent in our prayer. God invites us to be closer to him by praying often. He always hears and answers our prayers. We just need to be patient.

        October the Month of the Rosary

        The 13th of October was the celebration of National Rosary Day. The Rosary is a collection of prayers that helps us to reflect on key moments in Jesus’ life.

        When we say the rosary we might focus on one of the four mysteries:

        Rosary.png
        • Joyful mysteries- Jesus’ childhood,
        • Luminous (Light) mysteries- Jesus’ adult life,
        • Sorrowful Mysteries- The events of Good Friday,
        • Glorious mysteries- What happened after Jesus’ Resurrection. In each mystery, there are 5 moments in the scripture of Jesus’ life that we reflect on.
        • Saying the Rosary helps us to get closer to Jesus and Mary by reflecting on key events in their life. It also helps us to remember that Jesus experiences the same feelings that we do.

        SPOTLIGHT ON KINDER

        This week at St Joseph’s we were lucky enough to have a guest speaker come to our school and answer all our questions about Australian native stingless bees. Mrs Maginnity shared with us her bee knowledge and the Australian Native Bee Company donated a bee hive to our school so we can help ensure our future is bright. We tasted honey, felt bee wax and listened to the bees buzzing in the hive. Here are some of the fabulous bee maps, scientific insect drawings and the creative tree we made to house our bee creations and flowers. We love learning about bees and their importance to our ecosystem.

        BUCKET FILLING FRIENDSHIP GROUPS- Ms Danielle Nilon

        In BFF groups we have been reading Karen Sigmund's books. The book 'Hey Warrior' describes our amygdala (the protective part of our brain responsible for our fight, flight, freeze response) as a special warrior that takes its role as protector of us very seriously.
        Each student created their own warrior and gave it a name. We have talked about how we can calm our warriors down when we need to. These photos show the cool warriors our creative children came up with.
